The first SC-SAGD Pilot in the Grosmont

The Grosmont Formation is an Upper Devonian carbonate succession in north-eastern Alberta that contains 64.5 billion m³ of 7-10°API gravity bitumen resource. Laricina Energy Ltd. and its partner, OSUM Oil Sands Corp. have constructed the first solvent-cyclic steam-assisted gravity drainage (SC-SAGD) Pilot to exploit this vast resource. This paper provides a geological overview of the resource, reviews the key reservoir parameters, discusses the Pilot performance predictions and outlines the Pilot objectives. It also discusses the drilling and completion performance in the Grosmont reservoir and outlines surface facilities constructed for the thermal project. Early results from the Pilot are also highlighted.
